The Singing Steel Drum

A History of singing steel

How The SSD Came To Be

From Propane Tank to Global Groove — The Story of the Steel Tongue Drum

It all started with a spark of inspiration.

In the early 2000s, American musician and maker Dennis Havlena was captivated by the enchanting sounds of the Hang Drum, a rare Swiss creation with a price and mystique to match. But Dennis had a vision: to make that kind of magic more accessible—to bring those soothing, meditative tones into the hands of music lovers everywhere.

So he grabbed a 20-pound propane tank, cut melodic slits (or “tongues”) into its surface, and tuned each one by adjusting its length. What emerged was a beautiful, handcrafted steel drum he called the Hank Drum—a playful fusion of the words Hang and Tank.

Instead of keeping it to himself, Dennis did something extraordinary: he shared his creation freely with the world, posting instructions online so that anyone, anywhere, could build their own.

That single act of generosity sparked a global movement.

Makers everywhere began crafting their own variations—each one unique, each one inspired by that original act of ingenuity. Today, the steel tongue drum is played in yoga studios, schools, healing spaces, music festivals, and homes across the globe.

And it all began with one man, one idea, and one humble propane tank.

The Art of Tuning Metal

Why Propane Tanks?

At the heart of the steel tongue drum lies something unexpected: an old propane tank.

These tanks are more than just scrap metal—they’re the perfect vessel for sonic transformation. Affordable, widely available, and made from mild steel, propane tanks offer a strong yet workable foundation for hand-building an instrument that sings.

Their shape is a gift to acoustics: rounded, bell-like ends and a sealed chamber create a natural resonance chamber—like a built-in speaker cabinet. When tongues are cut into the steel, they act as cantilevered reeds, each one vibrating at its own frequency while the tank body amplifies the sound with warmth and clarity.

The steel is thick enough to hold its form without collapsing, yet flexible enough for makers to cut and tune with basic tools. For DIY builders and seasoned creators alike, propane tanks offer the ideal mix of structure, sound, and soul.

Best of all? It’s recycled.

Turning discarded tanks into beautiful instruments is an act of sonic alchemy. Around here, we like to say:

Helping Mother Nature has never sounded so good.

Because sometimes, turning trash into treasure is exactly what the world needs.

Kashakas

Durable, Natural, Beautiful

Hand Percussion Instrument

Kashakas are a captivating hand percussion instrument consisting of two round shakers connected by sturdy paracord. Players create mesmerizing rhythms by swinging one ball around the hand—producing a distinctive clacking sound when the balls collide and rich shaker tones when moved in different patterns.

This ancient instrument originated in Africa, where it was traditionally crafted from gourds of the Oncoba Spinosa tree. Known by many names across different cultures, the Kashaka has traveled the world as both a musical instrument and a tool for developing hand-eye coordination, relieving stress, and deepening focus through rhythmic meditation.
